What is Punany? Well if you have to ask ……. Punany is:
Oakland’s Punany Poets, an artists performance group composed of poets/writers, dancers, visual artists, musicians, and singers, were originally featured in the longest segment of HBO’s “Real Sex” in history promoting black love, sensuality, self respect and AIDS Awareness. Since the segment “Lesson in Love” first aired in March 2000 the group has reprinted the coveted book, Punany: The Hip Hop Psalms (now a collector’s item), originally created in response to the untimely death of Eric ‘Eazy E’ Wright of AIDS complications in 1995. The idea to produce a book of erotica which promotes AIDS awareness was born in the simple setting of aspiring writers who broke bread and psalms in a freestyle format on the floor of a small apartment. In urban communities young minds, just like young bodies, mature quickly. The desire to experience love is heightened in the lives of those who awaken daily to face combat. Here in the urban war zone we are fighting for respect, we are fighting for space, and we are fighting for a freedom that does not equal abandonment, but rather a freedom that includes human rights.
In the dark of night, gunfire all about you, screams permeate the air; rage is your one true companion. And then there is love… or at least sex, a symptom of love: or so you believe. Three feet beneath the battlefield you steal a moment with a fellow soldier, unarmed, unshielded, uncommitted, unadulterated freedom, Judas’ kiss, primal bliss, welcoming the enemy into your temple, and you die a coward’s death. Because no one can know that all you have fought for has been surrendered to the virus formerly known as “The Gay Plague.”
